Workplace-based assessment is a method applying the structured evaluation of a physicians’ work in daily clinical situations. Because a single method is not able to obtain an accurate picture of the various aspects of a physician's competence, several different instruments are used. Feedback given to the medical students and junior physicians by qualified clinicians is extremely important and is a central element of all forms of WPBA.
Workplace-based assessment supports students and junior physicians as they acquire practical medical skills by documenting the level of competence that has been reached and therefore making it easier to set the next learning goal. Repeated several times, workplace-based assessments provide a useful basis for discussions in personal evaluations and apprisal.
