E-learning as part of medical studies in Bern

What is meant by e-learning?

E-learning is any form of learning that makes use of modern electronic media, especially computers and the internet. Roughly speaking, e-learning can be divided into three categories:

  1. Tutorial systems that relay subject matter = online learning programmes
  2. Communications systems for the exchange of information and opinions
  3. Collaboration systems that allow students to work on material together

The online learning programmes are developed by the instructors in cooperation with the Department for Teaching and Media (AUM). Our productions can be roughly divided into three categories based on their didactic structure:

  1. Learning programmes for pattern recognition
  2. Linear learning programmes
  3. Hypertext and similar learning programmes
  4. iMedLearn
Students studying in groups using books, computers and microscopes
Students receiving instruction in histology The small groups work at microscopes and monitors as well as with books

The open access principle

As a general rule, all online learning programmes are freely accessible using the internet. They are only password protected when required by the licensing agreement, if copyright violations are possible or if necessary to protect patient privacy.
The starting point for all online learning resources.

One starting page for all online resources

All online resources developed by us and recommended by the instructors are brought together under http://e-learning.studmed.unibe.ch/. They are listed along with the field of study and appropriate academic year. This gives students an overview of all available programmes on a single page.

E-learning as part of medical studies in Bern

Independent study plays a major role in the PBL* curriculum in Bern. Whenever possible, this is supported by online learning programmes and discussion forums. Because of the fact that we have a large student body (about 160 / year), instructors who are also researchers and / or clinicians with major demands on their time and very clearly defined subject matter to be learned, collaborative systems are not used.
