Standardized Patients

What are Standardized Patients?

Standardized Patients, also called Simulated Patients, are healthy persons who were trained to act like a patient. These persons can be engaged laymen or professional actors. Standardized Patients are used for educational purposes as well as for assessment.
In education, the main objective is mostly communication training. Besides playing the role of a patient, the Standardized Patients have the task to give feedback to the students from a patient’s perspective.
In assessment, candidates have to demonstrate their competence in taking a medical history or in doing a physical examination.
